Interview Do Not’s

By OIT Careers Team September 17, 2015
In a professional environment, many things happen fast. This is especially true for new potential employees. Decisions will be made quickly about how qualified someone is for a job. In order to make these decisions positive, here are five things to avoid in an interview setting:
  1. Don’t disregard instructions- It is important to follow the instructions for the application process. It will ensure that you get the best chance of showing what you can bring to the table.
  2. Don’t show up late- Managers sacrifice a lot of time to go through the interview process, especially if there is a panel that has to coordinate schedules. If you are late, it shows a lack of respect before you even get the chance to shake hands.
  3. Don’t “wing it”- Sometimes the interviewer will ask you to prepare then present something during the interview. If this is the case, invest more time in it, rather than less. Make sure it is polished.
  4. Don’t use negative comments- You don’t need to discuss why you don’t deserve the job. If you weren’t qualified, you would not have been invited for the interview. Talk about your strengths.
  5. Don’t second guess yourself- Confidence in your abilities is very apparent and important. Have the confidence you should in your ability to be an asset to the team.
Now you know some tricks of the trade, go have some great interviews!

Interview Do’s

By OIT Careers Team September 17, 2015
The secret to a good interview is a good impression. Here are five tips to help your first impression be stellar:
  1. Be professional- If you are applying for a job, let them know you are ready to fill all of the responsibilities. Show the interview panel that you take this seriously.
  2. Dress for the job- The common practice is to find out what the dress standards are for the job, then go one step above that for the interview.
  3. Be enthusiastic- Especially at BYU, we are hiring you onto a team that is unified. You will love it, so be to be happy.
  4. Show your strengths- Humility is important, but too much is a flaw. Say what your strengths are and why they make you the best candidate.
  5. Arrive on time- The rule of thumb is five to ten minutes early for the actual interview time. Let them know you are here, and take the extra time to prepare.
Hopefully this gets you started on the right track. Good luck! Read Full Story
